Following their unceremonious exit from the FA Cup on Monday at the hands of fierce rivals Chelsea, Premier League heavyweights Manchester United have realised their problems at midfield are still as gaping as ever. Indeed, record £89-million signing Paul Pogba has been proverbially absent in that match and Reds manager Jose Mourinho has decided reinforcement is needed.
In that regard, the Portuguese tactician has homed in on one of his former players Mesut Ozil, according to English sports outlet Football London.
True enough, the two have already worked together during their days at Real Madrid several seasons ago, which saw Mourinho win numerous silverware before he was eventually shown the exit door at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
Now it appears Mourinho is eager for a reunion with the German international, whose contract at Arsenal is set to expire in 2018.
Contract negotiations between Ozil and the Gunners hierarchy have dragged on with minimal progress since last year, fuelling speculation that the former Schalke star could be itching to leave the London giants and seek pastures anew after three seasons at Arsenal.
The World Cup winners hesitation on renewing his contract with Arsenal has been viewed as a great opportunity the Old Trafford outfit to sign the 28-year-old.
“Ozil is unique,” Mourinho once told of the Gelsenkirchen-born footballer. “There is no copy of him – not even a bad one. He is the best number 10 in the world.”
While the Manchester United manager is clearly a fan of Ozil, it remains to be seen whether he will make a serious move for the Gunners midfielder in the summer.
Ozil has made a total 31 appearances for Arsenal so far this season, scoring nine goals and notching nine assists.
